Oahu is small. The day you pick still decides everything.
Which circle-island run actually stops at Haleʻiwa. What a turtle snorkel off Waikīkī costs before the boat leaves. Whether the North Shore is swimmable the week you land. Reviews of every tour on the island.
Five bookings a first week on Oahu hangs off.
The circle-island run, a turtle morning, the luau, the movie valley and the parasail over Waikīkī. What each costs and what the people who took it say.
01The whole islandOahu Grand Circle Island and Haleiwa Tour: 9-Hr Deluxe ExperienceNine hours, the windward coast, the Pali and Haleʻiwa town. Do it on day one and the rest of the week makes sense.
02The turtle morningWaikiki Catamaran Snorkel Sail with Lunch: Turtles GuaranteedA catamaran off Waikīkī to the turtle ground with lunch aboard. Sails early, before the trades pick up.
03Twenty minutes upParasailing Experience in Waikiki, HIParasail off the Waikīkī reef with Diamond Head behind you. Cheapest thrill on the island by a distance.
04The eveningToa Luau at Waimea Valley, OahuA luau at Waimea Valley on the North Shore, in the valley rather than a hotel lawn.
05The movie valleyKualoa Ranch Movie Sites and Ranch TourKualoa Ranch under the Koʻolau, where half of Hollywood shoots its jungle. Book the ranch tour, not just the entry.
On Oahu the good morning starts at a harbour, not a hotel lobby.
Turtles feed in the shallows off Waikīkī before nine. Catamarans run out of Kewalo Basin all day and come back at sunset. Three kinds of water day, what it costs to board each one, and where it sails from.
North Shore, windward coast, the crater side: pick your half of Oahu.
The ridge runs the length of the island and the weather changes when you cross it. Six places to build a day around, and the best day out in each.
What a day out on Oahu actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Plenty of the best Oahu days come in under the cost of a Waikīkī dinner.
Crater walks, downtown history walks, the trolley lines and the short snorkel runs off Waikīkī.
The full-day standards: the circle-island loop, catamaran snorkel sails, luaus and the ranch tours.
Four Oahu bookings that will not wait for you.
Most of the island can be sorted the night before over a plate lunch. These four run on reservation windows, closed days and vehicle counts that take no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01Hanauma Bay SnorkelingThe bay is a nature preserve with a daily cap and a reservation window that opens two days ahead. It closes every Monday and Tuesday regardless.
- 02Diamond Head CraterOut-of-state visitors need an entry reservation for a timed slot, and the early ones go first — the trail has no shade and the crater bakes by ten.
- 03Kualoa Ranch Movie Sites and Ranch TourThe valley is private ranch land with a fixed number of trucks per departure. Turn up without a booking and you are looking at it from the highway.
- 04Paradise Cove LuauOne pig, one oven, one seating. The big luaus sell their good tables weeks out and the shoulder-season nights still fill.
On Oahu the swell decides which side of the island you swim on.
From November the north swell shuts the top of the island for anything but watching, and the calm water moves to the south and west. In summer it flips: Waikīkī goes small and glassy, and the North Shore turns into the snorkelling. Same island, opposite halves, depending on the month you land.
Three things that only happen on Oahu.
Beaches and boat trips exist everywhere warm. A north swell that shuts a coastline every winter, a valley Hollywood rents by the day, and an evening built around an underground oven do not.

The North Shore Swell
From November the North Pacific sends swell straight at the seven miles between Haleʻiwa and Sunset Beach, and a coast that was flat in September turns into the biggest wave arena on earth. Contests run on a waiting period rather than a date, because nobody can promise the surf. Learning happens on the south side in those months; the North Shore is for watching from the sand at Ehukai.

Kualoa and the Movie Valley
Kaʻaʻawa Valley sits under a wall of Koʻolau ridge so green it reads as fake on film, which is why Jurassic Park, Lost and half the Marvel catalogue shot here. It is still a working cattle ranch. The tours run on ranch schedules and open-sided trucks, and the movie sites are the excuse to get into a valley that would otherwise stay closed.

The Luau, Done Properly
A real luau is built around an imu, a pit oven where a whole pig cooks buried under banana leaves and hot rock since morning. The unearthing is the event. Some run on hotel lawns in Waikīkī, some out in the valleys and on the west side, and the difference between them is mostly how far you are willing to drive.
